Hotel Del Coronado

When Hotel Del Coronado opened in 1888, it was the largest hotel in the world. Today, The Del is one of the most historic and recognizable tributes to Victorian architecture in America. In the past 125 years it has hosted countless presidents, celebrities and royalty. Following renovations Wallop’s goal was to tell the story through contemporary design and cinematic short films. But we didn’t just focus on the user experience; we set out to dramatically improve conversions by relying on our expertise with responsive design to build a custom booking engine on the Synxis API.

The Challenge

The previous website was dated, hard to use, and didn’t convey the striking physical experience of The Del. The hotel’s sales and marketing team needed a digital platform that captured the story, experience, and timeless qualities of the hotel. That’s where Wallop Film was brought in – to produce and direct a short film that would capture what makes The Del so special and iconic. The Del team also felt the website could do a better job of converting users; especially those on mobile devices. Consequently Wallop was tasked with planning, designing, and building a booking engine from the ground up on a responsive framework that interfaced with their GDS through a custom API handler. The new booking engine was designed to keep people on the site throughout the booking process. It would dramatically improve the booking experience and allow for unlimited customization and very granular tracking/optimization.

The Result

There were a lot of firsts on this project. The bulk of our work was in redesigning around the key points of conversion for the hotel, namely the responsive booking engine built with a custom API handler that interfaces with the Synxis booking engine. The cinematic short, which ties together themes of memory-building, multi-generational travel and celebration, has already received extremely positive feedback from the industry. True to form, the revamped website has eliminated many of the pain points from the previous iteration while maintaining a strong visual narrative. Without going into too much technical detail, we see this website as a major step forward in the hospitality industry.

We also launched a complementary stand-alone site for Beach Village at The Del, their ultra-luxury beachfront villa inventory.
